The complete roster, grouped the way the site is grouped.

A road drawn along the topThe Parkway follows ridge crests rather than valleys, which is a scenic decision that cost far more in construction than a valley alignment would have.High Ground
The highest ground east of the MississippiMount Mitchell rises to 6,684 feet and the spur road to it leaves the Parkway near milepost 355, in a spruce-fir forest unlike anything below.High Ground
A heath bald that is not a natural clearingThe heath balds at Craggy Gardens are open ground whose origin is still argued, and the rhododendron display is what draws the traffic.High Ground
Where the road crosses overThe route uses gaps in the ridge line, and the gaps are also where the older roads and the settlements already were.High Ground
Begun as public worksConstruction began in 1935 as a Depression-era public-works project, which set both the labour supply and the political pressure to keep it moving. The Build
Italian and Spanish stonework, still standingImmigrant stonemasons faced the culverts, parapets and tunnel portals, and their work is the most visible surviving craft on the road. The Build
The last gap, built from the top downThe Linn Cove Viaduct opened in 1987 as a segmental concrete bridge built without a haul road below, specifically so Grandfather Mountain would not be cut.The Build
Who actually did the workCivilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration camps supplied much of the labour, and the camp locations track the construction sequence. The Build
A route that had to be argued overThe alignment through western North Carolina was disputed for years, including with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and the final line reflects that. The Build
A road with nothing to sellCommercial traffic and roadside business are excluded by design, which is why the Parkway looks unlike any other long road in the country. The Rules
Buying the view, not the landScenic easements were purchased over adjacent private land so the view from the road could be controlled without the government owning the farm. The Rules
Slow on purposeThe low speed limit is part of the design rather than a safety retrofit — the geometry was drawn for a driving pace, not a travel time. The Rules
Landscape architecture at road scaleRoadside planting and mowing regimes were specified by landscape architects, so even the vegetation edge is a designed line. The Rules
Songs collected in these valleysCollectors working in the southern Appalachians recorded ballad traditions with traceable British and Irish antecedents, and the collections are datable documents.Music
An instrument with an African lineageThe banjo reached the mountains through African American musicians, and the clawhammer style played here is part of that transmission.Music
A venue built into the roadThe Blue Ridge Music Center sits on the Parkway near milepost 213 and exists to keep the regional music audible on the road itself.Music
Why the recordings matterField recordings fixed performances that were otherwise unwritten, which is why specific singers and specific dates can be cited at all.Music
Zero is at the north endMilepost numbering runs from Rockfish Gap in Virginia southward, so every landmark on the road has a number and the numbers only go one way.Mileposts
The most photographed thing on the roadMabry Mill at milepost 176 is a preserved water-powered mill and is the single most photographed structure on the Parkway.Mileposts
A stop that predates the roadThe Peaks of Otter were a destination long before the Parkway reached them, which is why the road bends to include them.Mileposts
Twenty-six holes through rockThe Parkway's tunnels are faced in stone at their portals and were cut rather than blasted open, which is a cost decision that shows.Mileposts
